USA Baseball National Team Identification Series Update; Andy Karlan Added to Short List

09/20/2013, 5:30pm EDT
By Staff Reports, Photos by Robert Northington

Andy Karlan560 of the top players in the 16u and 17u age groups from nearly every state in the United States converged on the USA Baseball complex in Cary, North Carolina.  Skills trials and games were held in front of the Team USA staff and scouts, as well as over 50 college coaches.

45 players in each age group were notified that they under consideration for the eight open spots on their prospective Team USA 40 man final trial roster.

Andy Karlan of Larchmont, NY (Catcher, Mamaroneck HS) was named to this “short list”.

Karlan threw out three runners who attempted to steal bases while he was behind the plate. He also received and blocked well in his nine innings behind the plate.  Offensively, he hit a long double to the left-centerfield wall in this wood bat event.

Although Karlan was not offered the single open catching position (he lost out to a player from Nebraska), he has been invited back to compete in the 2014 NTIS at the 17u level.

The 2013 USA Baseball National Team Identification Series (NTIS) consisted of four separate age groups — 11U, 14U, 16U, and 17U.

The three rounds of qualifying tryouts held locally, regionally and at the national level. The long and thorough process is known as the National Team Identification Series.

The 16U and 17U and NTIS national events were held Aug. 22-25, 2013, at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary.
